All of our facilities generate some amounts of hazardous waste. To minimize it, we use as few hazardous chemicals as possible. Although many of our facilities generate relatively small amounts of waste, we continually look for lower-impact products and processes.
At our Lewiston plant, we recover energy by burning nonhazardous residual solids from our wastewater treatment system in our power boiler. Not only does this help reduce our natural gas use, it also cuts the amount of residual waste going to landfills by more than 95 percent.
Of the waste we send to landfills, most is wood ash, which is often used as landfill cover.
